I'd say it's a combination of filmmakers' sense of "epic" cinema and a weakness in screenwriting to trim the fat, make things consise, advance the plot and develop characters simultaneously, etc.

Am I the only one that thinks this "controversy" is just viral marketing? How many people will here "Jen gets naked" without the details you just provided, and go to see it?
