So we are supposed to believe that because Basic Instinct 2 tanked at the box office this weekend the erotic thriller is a dead sub-genre. First of all, it wasn't that lively to begin with. Secondly and more importantly, the only thing to take away from the box office tank job by Basic Instinct 2 is that occasionally audiences can smell true crap from far away. The fact that Basic Instinct 2 failed is a creative failure. THE MOVIE SUCKED! And everyone knew it.
Audiences were not rejecting sexy movies by not seeing Basic Instinct 2 they were rejecting being told by Sharon Stone what is sexy. Sharon Stone's desperate attention seeking prior to the films opening simply demonstrated to audiences what they already suspected, that the film was no good and the only way to drum up an audience was to try to convince people the film was shocking and sexy. It wasn't and when critics told everyone that Friday morning people, even the pervs, stayed home.
Nevertheless here is a rather obnoxious article from Reuters featuring quotes from Director Paul Verhoeven about uptight Americans who cannot accept sexually provocative films.
