What once looked like a cakewalk weekend for the horror sequel The Grudge 2 suddenly looks quite competitive. The Robin Williams starring Barry Levinson directed comedy Man of the Year has put on a hell of campaign and are making a run at young audiences that many felt the film would not reach. Teens are not likely to turn out for MOTY but the college crowd is seeming receptive to the satire that posits a Jon Stewart-esque comedian running for and winning the Presidency.
The campaign for Grudge 2 on the other hand has been solid if unremarkable. Commercials and trailers have tipped Sarah Michele Geller's early exit from the film but in this case the genre is the star not the actress and the horror genre is as strong as ever, especially for PG-13 horror movie.
The anomaly of the weekend is the WWE produced The Marine starring World Wrestling champion John Cena. The film has received a surprisingly strong ad push and even managed a feature story in USA Today on Monday touting Cena as a next generation action star. Whether the film can top the relatively weak though slightly profitable performance of WWE's first movie See No Evil is questionable. The action genre is no longer as reliable as it once was and up against a pair of strong PG-13 releases, the share of audience left for The Marine is slim.
There is one last surprise release of the week that looks to draw audiences that don't often go to the movies. One Night With The King is after the Passion of the Christ audience but on 900 screens the film is no threat to any of the new or holdover releases.

Well I actually saw The Grudge 2 yesterday. Man was it bad. Luckily, I was with a bunch of friends so we just messed around.
