Is Fox smart to cut back the theater count on Borat. Concerned about low interest from the middle of the country, the producers of Borat decided to scale back the opening weekend theater count to just 800 screens. The film will expand to more than 2000 screens on November 10th.
There has been buzz that Borat may have peaked to soon with the buzz building throughout September with it's debut at the Toronto Film Festival and major newspaper features in early October. Now that the film is ready to hit theaters the buzz does seem to be slowing down.
Still, anyone who watches College Gameday on ESPN saturday mornings can tell you that Borat is wildly popular with the college crowd. In the massive crowd scenes on ESPN; Borat's image in various college sweaters and t-shirts, his various catchphrases and whatnot are second only to the image of Homer Simpson.
Can Borat turn out the fickle college crowds? Well, competition this weekend shouldn't be a problem as the other two wide releases are a pair of kiddie flicks like to cannabalize each other. Saw 3 is likely to slow this weekend, as has been the pattern for the series, big opening big second weekend drop.
As for those two other wide releases The Santa Claus 3 and Flushed Away. The ego battle between Disney (home of Santa) and Dreamworks (Flushed) is about to bite both studios in the ass as both kiddie flicks will cut their opening weekends in half in order to spite each other. I expect Santa Clause with it's cache of audience awareness will slip past Flushed Away but both films could have succeeded quite well had the studios not decided on a pissing contest.

Borat is not coming to my town until next week. Fox is seriously worried about how the film is going to play in the midwest because my local theater usually gets any movie that is on atleast 600 screens. Borat's on 800 and it's not coming here.
