It's probably going to sound facetious, but I've seen a bunch of interesting films lately, and I'm not sure which ones I should review.

So I'd like you to tell me which two or three you want to see, or what would be most interesting for the site in general:

Before Sunset (Richard Linklater)
Memories of Murder (Joon-Ho Bong)
Oldboy (Chan-Wook Park)
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (Kim Ki-Duk)
A Tale of Two Sisters (Kim Jae-Woon)
Code 46 (Michael Winterbottom)
One Missed Call (Takashi Miike)

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring

Saw it, loved it... want to hear what you thought. That's my first choice.

I want to hear what you think on Code 46, though.

We may have reviews coming for Oldboy and Before Sunset from a new staff member. Just for the record. That doesn't mean you can't do another one for either one. Just thought you'd wanna know.

Yep, like Mac said. In fact, it's not of terrible importance now, but we encourage multiple reviews of the same movies if people are willing to submit them, because it'll give the viewers a sense of either consensus or variance.

As for right now, you might wanna wait a day or two and see what the other reviews say. (I can tell you they're pretty complimentary.) If there's anything you disagree about, it'd probably be useful to voice your own opinions; if you more or less agree, it'd probably benefit visitors more to hear about another movie.

But it's all according to your preference.

If you want, you can even start outlining reviews for each of these movies. If there are some you don't get around to, we can either delete them for you or convert them to quick reviews.

Code 46 review submitted.

I'll write on up for Before Sunset, but I want to see it again first (and possibly catch another viewing of Before Sunrise).

I looked for good picture for quite a while, but couldn't find more than one or two decent ones.

And you should really take a look at Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. The first is the best film of 1995 and one of the best of the '90s, and the second stands at #2 on my Top Ten of 2004 right now.

hey there... we're working on it. It'll have to go in the pile of requests. I think it ranks at # 378? So i'll probably get to it sometime next year. Laughing Ok, but seriously... we'll try to see what we can find. Smile

Ooo Snap. Reading in... now.

Edit: You don't announce new reviews on the front page somewhere, or did I miss it?

No. Not at the present. When new Op-Ed pieces pop up, a red "Hot off the Press" thing pops up on the respective column on the front page (plus it's usually the top article on the front page), but as of yet we have nothing on the front page saying new reviews are up. Let me see what Thom has to say about that.

Yeah, I was just thinking that since one of the main draws of movie websites is usually the reviews of movies, maybe it'd get you a few extra hits if people could see what that sort of thing was added.

Edit: Nice review, TC. Sounds slightly like Gattaca with its vision of the future, which greatly appeals to me.

I wrote this way back in May, when there wasn't much information and I had to go on my instinct, but this is what I had for Code 46:

I've tried to read several reviews on this, but I can't seem to get a straight answer out of anyone as to what the plot of this movie really is. Is that a flaw of the film? Maybe. But from what I've been able to grasp, the film seems to be a cross between Gattaca and Equilibrium. Two people fall in love, but it seems the world has caved in too much for love to be something that is allowed, and then the plot gets murky. Is it something to do with papers? Is it something to do with genetics and creating life? I am not certain, but something doesn't seem right, especially when one critic said they "accidentally indulge one's Oedipal desires." I'll say no for now.

Yeah, again I'll mention it. Right now we rely on a very powerful RSS feed to get what we THINK is most of our hits. It tells different news sites what recent entries are up on our site.

We still aren't quite sure what kind of REGULAR readers we have. We're working on compiling more specific and dynamic stats on visitors and hits.

Yeah, see... I like Gattaca a lot, and I admired Equilibrium purely for its unique gunplay... but if this film IS a lot like Gattaca, I'd love it. Gattaca is one of my favorite films, believe it or not.

Anyway, sounds like your description was right on. Kudos.

yeah. Gattaca has some interesting ethics playing in it and other biological questions. Its interesting. But from what I understand from TC... Code 46 falls down somewhere in the end....

I need to see Gattaca. I'm always surprised it pops up on your faves lists as I remember it getting a LOT of flak back when it came out.

Equilibrium was an incredible disappointment but yes, gun kata owned.

Did you like eXistenZ, Amir0x? I didn't ADORE it or anythign, but for some reason whenever I think of those movies I think of eXistenZ.

Yeah, Gattaca was actually completely overlooked when it came out.

I don't know how true this actually is, but according to the insert that came with the DVD and the new ratings at rottentomatoes, the movie has since been recognized as one of the crowning achievements in sci-fi during the 90s.

That said, in my own opinion, I just love everything about it. The performances are just right on target. The picture that is painted of the future is just so believable and doesn't rely on amazing special effects in order to be effective. The plot itself, which is part thriller, part sci-fi love story, is also very, very well executed. Strikes all the right notes, imho, and it's sad this film is so easily overlooked. And I'm not even a fan of sci-fi, as you know my rants against Star Wars. Although, admittedly, Gattaca is an entirely different type of sci-fi.

Edit: Oh yeah, eXistenZ. Yeah, I own it. I liked it enough to own it. I probably like it more than I should, partly because of the whole videogame concept, but yeah I think it's just nifty.

I shall have to check it out one day then. Sarah's seen it though, so not gonna rush out to rent it.
