I know Pedro Almodovar has previous films dealing with the Catholic church, and maybe there's some nuns in there. Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys? Nuns on the Run? I'm sure imdb will tell you loads more. _________________ "Trying is the first step toward failure." -Homer Simpson |

Agnes of God, with Jane Fonda. The Flying Nun, with Sally Field (which should totally be a movie, even though it's not). |

oo, that sounds like a good one and one that would actually work well with Magdalene Sisters. Neat!

Btw, Nate, why would I take the easy way out, when I have a whole staff to do the work for me. _________________ Playing the world's smallest violin while nothing burns. |

Ok so I kinda have a huge smattering of nun films, but the most disturbing of them all is the nunsplotation film. I kid you not, it is as close to nun porn as you're going to get. I couldn't believe it!! And my professor wants me to include it in my thesis! So guess who is now the proud owner of nunporn. Yeah, you guessed it. Poor Mac is going to have a field day with that. He thought the exorcist was a bad edition... ha! Maybe I'll hide all my nun films in the computer room with my school books.
How in the world did I get pulled into writing a frickin' 5 chapter book about the degradation of the nun in film: 1940-2005 UNBELIEVABLE! I was so gonna write a book on the two-view grading scale.. how did this happen?
Anyways... I thought I'd just express my dumbstruckedness here... unfrickin' believable.

Here's a list of all the movies I have so far. Not all of them are main pieces, but references. I'm still working through a huge list I've compiled and its coming along... slowly.
The Sinful nuns of Saint Valentine (so not the porn film every made it out to be. There really isn't anything there... The Devils is more pornographic than this)
Story of a Cloistered Nun
The Trouble with Angels
Brides of Christ
Lilies of the Field
Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison
Libertarias
El Mar
Nuns on the Run
Change of Habit
The Magdalene Sisters
Sex in a Cold Climate
Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
The Bells of Saint Mary's
A Nun's Story
The Sound of Music
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Black Narcissus
the Devils
Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun
The Nun
Sister Act 1 & 2

I am sharing this with you, but this is totally not to be stolen in any way or I will murder anyone who does. MURDER YOU!!! But I just wanted to get some feedback.
But I will be discussing smaller films within the chapters, but i had to focus on a few films that really bring together the time period.
Title: Half a Woman: The Nun in Film WWII to the Present
Purpose: To explore the movement of the character of the nun from a vision of purity and social well-being to the embodiment of moral depravity and social corruption.
Introduction: But Look At Me! I'm a Nun! I'm a Penguin!
Present a general image of the Catholic nuns and their history, their role in America and Great Britain as societies' first independent women, the backbone of America's schools and hospitals and the taking of vows as the ultimate sacrifice for a young woman.
Chapter 1: Do You Think It's a Good Thing to Let Her Feel Important? (1945-1969)
A. A Brief Timeline of Events (1 page)
1. Major Film History Events
2. Major Historical Events
3. Major Women's Rights Events
4. Major Catholic Church Events
B. Overall View of the nun in this period of film
1. What is the consensus
i. Are nuns good? Are they evil?
ii. What do they signify
2. Her common role in the film
i. Motherly figure?
ii. Rebel? Sexual?
3. Vice and Virtues
i. What are the qualities of the nun
C. Discussion of two prominent films and their nun figures
1. The Bells of St. Marys (1945)
i. Dir. Leo McCarey
ii. Bing Crosby
iii. Ingrid Bergman
2. --------------------
Chapter 2: Sin Can Be Caught as Easily as the Plague! (1970-1989)
A & B same as above
C. Discussion of two prominent films and their nun figures
1. The Devils(1971)
i. Dir. Ken Russell
ii. Vanessa Redgrave
iii. Oliver Reed
2. Agnes of God (1985)
i. Dir. Norman Jewison
ii. Jane Fonda
iii. Anne Bancroft
Chapter 3: It's Not Faith, It's Work. (1990-2005)
A&B same as other chapters
C. Discussion of two prominent films and their nun figures
1. Dead Man Walking (1995)
i. Dir. Tim Robbins
ii. Susan Sarandon
iii. Sean Penn
2. The Magdalene Sisters (2002)
i. Dir. Peter Mullan
Conclusion: Spectacles, Testicles, Wallet and Watch?
Bring together all the loose ends in order to form a more concise point that nuns have become a disgraced group of women in film, morally depraved and sexualized, within the media and film in particular. Parallel with the general shape of women's social role ("working women," social worker). _________________ Playing the world's smallest violin while nothing burns. |

If anyone caught video of this, you could use it as a film... kind of...

Nun rapped for wild dancing
BRUSSELS, Belgium (Reuters) -- A Belgian nun's acrobatic and indecorous dancing with a missionary during the Catholic World Youth Day in Germany over the weekend earned her a reprimand from her mother superior, a Belgian paper said on Tuesday.
Daily Het Laatste Nieuws showed pictures of a dancing Johanne Vertommen being held up in the air by the missionary, and then clinging to him with her legs wrapped around his body.
"I wouldn't do this at home but at such occasions I get carried away by the enthusiasm of the group," the 29-year-old told the paper later.
"My mother superior raised the issue today: she thinks I should watch out a bit and bear in mind that I represent our community," Vertommen said.
Pope Benedict attended the celebration at the Marienfeld, outside Cologne, in the presence of some 700,000 people. |
I also keep reading that as "Nun raped for wild dancing" and going wtf every time. _________________ Fuck dancing. Lets talk about art. |
