Really? I haven't seen it but, damn, that's high. I don't think I've ever given any movie a 100 for either, including the films I thought were the best of the year. _________________ "Trying is the first step toward failure." -Homer Simpson |

It was mildly entertaining and overall pretty underwhelming, so no, it didn't really deserve 100 popcorn. Or 93 smarts for that matter. But whatever. _________________ Fuck dancing. Lets talk about art. |

Ya, I was kind of suprised when I saw that also... Some of you were probably suprised with my 93 S 94 P. of my Date With Drew |

For the record, I addressed Reel Hero's grade of Four Brothers and he is supposed to get back to me in regards to it. I went ahead and put the review up because it's new and needs to be able to seen by our readers.
I will not post my entire statement in regards to it as part of it is specific to him and his grade, but I will post another part of it that applies to everyone and should be read and noted by all staff members for the future.
Quote: |
I try to let people grade their movies as they will. I never tell them their grade is WRONG. I am perfectly okay with you really really liking [a] film and by all means give it a generous score, but I would [ask that you make sure] your numbers match what you genuinely feel about the movie. I've only given 2 100 entertainments on S-P and they're both to movies generally LOVED by the entire world...heh. And 90s in general I don't give away more to more than 3 or 4 new movies a year if that. That's all I'm saying. If you can say [a movie] is your favorite movie this year and if you think it was [near flawless in smarts or popcorn, I will support any high grade you give a film.] |
Most often when I have a problem with a grade I do not put the review up until the writer gets back to me with a defense of their stance to avoid this very sort of thread (and another one of our writers has also taken issue with the grade through IM). This time I did not since it was the only review we had for the film thus far and it's #1 this week. Apparently that was a bad choice.
That said, if it is Mike's opinion that the film is as well crafted as his review and score denote, I would ask that you respect that opinion and debate it in a respectful manner. |

If that's his honest opinion, it's all fine and dandy. I was just surprised to see a film net a perfect score in a category. I don't know if we have any others that have? Someone want to look that up? I'm lazy.
Nevermind, I did it myself. My cutting off point was 95 for either ranking. Here's a list of what S-P reviewers think are some of the best films of all time. Note, this isn't meant to be mean-spirited, but just fulfilling a curiosity of what other films received such high rankings.

BTW, my beef with your Technocomedy reviews would not be that Ghostbusters scored a perfect '100', but that Back to the Future scored so low. Whaaah???? |

I enjoy BttF, and it's rewatchable and fun and great, but GB is just so quotable and burned into my psyche. Do you know how many times I've actually uttered:
Quote: |
Gozer the Gozerian... good evening. As a duly designated representative of the City, County and State of New York, I order you to cease any and all supernatural activity and return forthwith to your place of origin or to the nearest convenient parallel dimension. |
out loud? Too many times to be considered healthy. Back to the Future was more well rounded though. Check out the combined rating. 86 and 86. I'm not sure where you're going with this. |

Ghostbusters??
They say scent is the strongest trigger to memory, but I haven't thought about that movie in ages.
Just thinking about the title brings back fond memories of watching that and all the Star Trek movies with my brothers on lazy summer afternoons.

100 for FOUR BROTHERS? That is very much like calling "The Stupids" an underestimated comic masterpiece. That is very much like Roger Ebert taking Vincent Gallo & Rob Schneider out for dinner. On what distant and unfortunate galaxy does FOUR BROTHERS receive such esteem? In this case, the only explanation is drug induced...something... |

As it turns out, it is his opinion and he has told me he firmly stands by it. It's his favorite film of the year, so I respect that. |

Yeah, I'm with Mac on this.
You may not agree, but his opinion is his regardles of his reasons.
If I see another good review, I might have to check it out myself.
I can think of worse ways to spend at the movies. _________________ "Life is your chance, Arthur! Grab it! Squeeze the milk of life into your dirty glass and drink it warm!" |

I have heard pretty good things about Four Brothers, and it sounds like the type of movie that's bound to strongly affect a certain portion of its audience, so... makes sense.
Good job, Mike. Stick to your guns. |

I do have that difference pass for AMC. It can't be worse than Supercross.
Unless there's a movie you guys would like me to see (the previously mentioned one excluded). _________________ "Life is your chance, Arthur! Grab it! Squeeze the milk of life into your dirty glass and drink it warm!" |

I plan on giving a 100-100 to LOTR: ROTK whenever I review it.
In any event:
One thing I want to say about part of the #s, that doesn't always figure in, is that some of the scores are relative. Taking into account things like expectations or intentions. For example, I gave Mr. and Mrs. Smith S: 77 and P:83. Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a summer blockbuster, action flick, films that typically don't require a lot of thought. However, for an action summer blockbuster and its intentions, I thought it was smart and relatively crafted for within the field, so I adwarded it 77.
On the other hand, I also take expectations into account. So when I saw Alexander, I was especially dissappointed, perhaps a bit more so than I would have if it was an average director or poor director. Perhaps its biased, but its the honest truth. If you walk into a Steven Spielberg film and it was only ok, you feel gipped because Spielberg is supposed to be more than ok. |

I'd agree, although in those cases I try to be fair with the numbers, and save the harshness for the written review. (ROTK is actually my example too. I was very disappointed, but my expectations were pretty high.) |
