Struggling with her debilitating obsession with shopping and the sudden
collapse of her income source, Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher-Wedding Crashers) unintentionally lands
a job writing for a financial magazine after a drunken letter-mailing
mix-up. Ironically writing about the very consumer caution of which she
herself has not abided, Rebecca's innovative comparisons and
unconventional metaphors for economics grants her critical acclaim,
public success, and the admiration of her supportive boss Luke (Hugh Dancy-Ella Enchanted). But as
she draws closer to her ultimate goal of writing for renowned fashion
magazine Alette, she questions her true ambitions and must determine if
overcoming her "shopaholic" condition will bring her real happiness.
As a guy I can't say I'm familiar with the source material, though from what I hear this is very different from the novels that it's based on. From what I can see in this movie adaptation though, it's your standard chick flick, complete with all the cliches that come with, quirky best friend, main character loses it all, truth revealing act 2, etc. However the cast manages to overcome the material and make the movie good to look at and entertaining to watch. I also like the mannequin hallucinations Rebecca has throughout the movie visualizing just how addicted to shopping she is. I thought it was kind of cool in that they were never Mannequin style mannequins, but the faceless kind you normally see in stores, moving about.
Isla Fisher as always is cute and ditzy, the same as she always plays in every movie. Earlier on she was one of my more crush worthy actresses, but by this point I'm hoping she has a little more talent then just faking a good American accent. I hope she demonstrates more talent in her future roles, but there's none of that here. Just your standard Isla Fisher role.
One thing I really hate in movies is when they throw songs into a movie just to sell a soundtrack, which is what they tried to do here, more than half the songs featured in the movie don't fit the scene or anything in the slightest, which made the movie go down a good ten points for me.
Even though I am a guy I do admit I will watch the occasional chick flick that I'm not dragged to, if I find the story entertaining. They're the cinematic equivalent of a Milano cookie, they're light, and tasty, but you feel a little less of a man (if you're a guy) for liking them thanks to the marketing. Really an entertaining movie should just be an entertaining movie, not a guy movie or chick flick. This movie though never breaks through the genre that it is, and is clearly a chick flick.
It's forgettable fluff that will entertain you for an hour and a half, but that's about it. I know I'm not the demographic the movie was marketed towards, but like I said a movie should just be a movie, and not be part of a marketing tool.. And this nothing but standard, generic all the way. Isla Fisher is nice to look at though, so it has that going for it.
There are many chick flicks that get released all the time, and they're basically all the same movie, but some are still better than others. This may be inconsequential fluff, but at least it's a good, pretty to look at kind of fluff. You could do worse than watching or being forced to watch Confessions of a Shopaholic.
