Movie Review: Serenity

Combined Rating: 91% (S:90%; P:93%) - Serenity isn't just a science fiction movie made for die hard fans of the short lived tvshow. When I went into this movie I had no idea what Firefly was, and Ididn't have to. The movie fills in any gaps that could have been causedby it's transition to the big screen. This movie not only stands firmlyin the top sci-fi movies of all time, but stands firmly as a great film, with great performances, and great writing.

Movie Review: Terminator: Salvation

Combined Rating: 63% (S:50%; P:80%) - Terminator Salvation is certainly an action packed thrill ride with avery touching sub-plot that asks the audience and John Connor thequestion: what does it take to be human. Unfortunately it isovershadowed by the same cliche main plot we have seen in allTerminator movies which is to stop Skynet. It seems pretty logical thatafter three attempts were thwarted in the past, any future attemptswould be pointless. That being said I am glad we get to see aTerminator set in the post-apocalyptic world described to us but hardlyever show to us. Salvation had everything to let it stand on it's own,but senselessly relied on the same plot devices we have seen for 25years. That being said, at least Salvation relies on an action, storyrich, franchise that had great writing. Which is more than I can sayfor the other robot movie due out this summer. If you are a fan of theTerminator movies I highly recommend seeing this in theaters. For thoseout there that just like a fun movie, check it out when it comes toDVD.

Movie Review: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Combined Rating: 21% (S:10%; P:40%) - Revenge of the Fallen represents everything that iswrong with the film industry today, sacrifising anything resemblingplot or character development for flashy, mindless action. Fallentakes it a step further by trimming the action to an absolute minimum, leaving the audience braindead and bored. If you want to see a moviewith robots and great action go see Terminator: Salvation. I wouldnever recommend this movie to anyone when movies like Star Trek, Up,and The Hangover are still out. In fact you could catch the first twofights in this movie, go watch Up or The Hangover, refill yourbeverage, then be back in time for the finale and not have missed asingle thing. At least that way you'll see a real movie with realcomedy in between poorly executed fight scenes.

Movie Review: Tropic Thunder

Combined Rating: 87% (S:85%; P:90%) - It doesn't matter what genre Tropic Thunder fits into. It falls underthe category of you can never have too much of a good thing. Like allgreat movies you can watch it multiple times and it wont get old. Everytime you watch it you will hear a new line that you didn't hear beforebecause you laughed over it, or you'll catch a reference to a moviethat you didn't before. This movie easily earns best comedy of 2008,and it earns a spot on my best movies of 2008.

Movie Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Combined Rating: 27% (S:25%; P:30%) - X-men Origins: Wolverine suffers from riding the coat tales of agenerally well written and executed franchise and not being able todeliver adequate quality. Fox must have assumed that if they packaged amindless script, that would ordinarily be used for the likes of thenext Dragonball Evolution movie, in the shell of the successful X-menname then people would flock to this movie as they did before. Luckilyfor fans and general audience members alike the movie was leaked amonth early which hopefully saved people from wasting time and money onthis movie. X-men Origins: Wolverine is a half-assed comic adaptationthat doesn't stay true to it's source in the comics or prior movies.Even if you forget about it's comic counterpart, or predecessor in theX-men franchise, Wolverine is such an inconsistent, contradictory poorexcuse for a movie; it doesn't give the viewer any reason to care orenjoy it.

Movie Review: The Hangover

Combined Rating: 89% (S:85%; P:95%) - There are two movies this summer that I suggest everyone must see intheaters, and The Hangover is one of them. Todd Phillips is back anddelivers what is possibly his best flick to date. Only time will tell,as Old School and Road Trip have taken on an almost nostalgic qualitywhen you go back and watch them. One thing is for certain: Apatow andhis Funny People have some serious competition to overtake as funniestmovie of the summer. It's only June, but with only a handful ofcomedies yet to be released, it's not a long shot to say The Hangoveris possibly the best comedy of the year.
